Dovrefjell is the only place in Norway, and one of very few places in the world, where you can see the musk ox. Dovre & Lesja Aktiv offers muskox safari every day during the summer. The meeting point for this safari is at Basecamp Frich’s Hjerkinn 10:00, or at Kongsvold Fjellstue 10:15.

You will be guided by local tour guides from Dovre & Lesja Aktiv in the search for the musk oxen at Dovrefjell, and you are almost guaranteed to see this magnificent animal on this excursion. This safari is a hike, and because the animals move freely in the national park, it is difficult to predict how long or challenging each day will be. Generally, this safari lasts 5-6 hours depending on where the muskoxen are, weather and group fitness. The hike can be between 7-15 km with uphill hiking included, so this safari is therefore not suited for guests with health issues (heart, back, knees).

We recommend that you bring warm/wind proof clothes and waterproof hiking shoes, as we will ascend to above 1.000 m above sea level. Bring a packed lunch and drink. The guide will bring a telescope, but if you have binoculars, we recommend bringing those too.

The safari runs daily from the June 1 to mid October. The rest of the year, this safari can be booked with a private guide.
